Maytha Alhassen has repeatedly aligned herself with terrorists, extremist agitators, and anti-Israel groups. From promoting Rasmea Odeh and Marwan Barghouti as “freedom fighters” to partnering with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), Dream Defenders (DD), and the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR), Alhassen has built her reputation on excusing terrorism and spreading BDS propaganda.
Support for Terrorists
-
Rasmea Odeh: May 2015, Alhassen tweeted a photo of Odeh, a convicted PFLP terrorist who masterminded a Jerusalem supermarket bombing that killed two students, portraying her as a victim of U.S. prosecution. Odeh was convicted of immigration fraud, stripped of U.S. citizenship, and deported in 2017.
-
Marwan Barghouti: January 2015, Alhassen posed in front of a mural of Barghouti — the PA leader serving five life sentences for organizing suicide bombings — praising him in Instagram posts.
-
Terror movements: December 2012, she equated Hamas, Hezbollah, Salafism, and the Muslim Brotherhood with “nationalist movements,” minimizing their terrorist record.
Leading an Anti-Israel Trip
2015: Alhassen co-organized a Dream Defenders delegation to Israel and the West Bank, framed as exposing “ethnic cleansing” by Israel. The trip included meetings with Addameer, an NGO tied to senior PFLP members like Khalida Jarrar. Participants also posed with Diana Buttu, a former PLO spokesperson during the Second Intifada, and in front of murals honoring Barghouti.
Promoting Anti-Israel Agitators
-
Linda Sarsour: From 2014–2018, Alhassen repeatedly posted photos with Sarsour, defending her and praising her leadership. Sarsour has ties to Louis Farrakhan, has dismissed concerns over antisemitism, and frequently uses “Zionist” as a slur.
-
Zahra Billoo: April 2018, Alhassen appeared with Billoo, a CAIR official who defended Hamas and Hezbollah and compared Israel to ISIS.
Anti-Israel Activism
-
SJP & USCPR:
-
2019: Panelist at the National SJP Conference.
-
2018: Spoke at USCPR’s national conference, endorsing the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) and praising Black4Palestine founder Kristian Davis Bailey, who defended Hamas and promoted armed resistance.
-
2020: Speaker at Colorado College SJP event.
-
2019: Ran workshops during Israel Apartheid Week at Kenyon College.
-

A Consistent Pattern of Extremism
Alhassen has leveraged her academic and media roles to launder extremist rhetoric into mainstream spaces. By glorifying convicted terrorists, co-organizing delegations that meet with militant groups, and platforming agitators like Sarsour and Billoo, she normalizes antisemitism on campuses and beyond.
