What Is Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP)?

Jewish Voice for Peace is an anti-Zionist activist organization that brands itself as a progressive Jewish voice for Palestinian rights. Founded in 1996 in Berkeley, it has grown into a national network with a particularly strong presence on U.S. campuses. JVP frames its work around “human rights,” “justice,” and “equality,” and most notably presents them all as being grounded in Jewish ethical values. Its stated goals include:

  • Ending Israeli control over the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem
  • Supporting a “right of return” for Palestinian refugees
  • Promoting equal rights across Israel and Palestinian territories
  • Opposing antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of discrimination

On paper, it reads like a standard human rights platform. In practice, the focus is far more specific, with energy, especially on-campus, directed toward opposing Israel and dissenting Jewish voices through organized campaigns, political pressure, and campus activism. And in its messaging, its focus has included opposing the definition of antisemitism and spreading Holocaust inversion.

How Does JVP Use Judaism To Excuse Antisemitism?

JVP’s Jewish identity is central to its positioning. It allows the organization to operate as both participant and validator in activist spaces, where its presence is used to frame campaigns – often falsely – as internally supported within the Jewish community. They also use Jewish identity to excuse Holocaust inversion, often using the phrase, “‘Never Again’ is now” in reference to the Israel-Gaza war after the massacre of Jews on October 7th. Holocaust inversion, of course, is a formal element of antisemitism as defined by the IHRA (JVP opposes this definition).

They have even gone beyond Holocaust inversion to “Egyptian Exodus’ inversion when, in 2026, they released a ‘JVP Haggadah’ for Passover, stating, “Opposing Pharaohs is a Jewish tradition…from the U.S. to Palestine to Iran.” Not only casting Israel as a modern-day enslaving Pharaoh, they also lend their support to the Iranian regime, stating they “stand with the Iranian people’s struggle for self-determination,” while ignoring the fact that the regime murdered thousands of its own people in the same year.

How Does JVP Cause Unrest On Campuses?

JVP regularly partners with groups such as Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), forming coalitions that coordinate protests, messaging, and campaigns across campuses. The result is a synchronized ecosystem where messaging spreads quickly and consistently. JVP chapters are deeply involved in demonstrations, disruptions, and ongoing protest activity. These environments tend to escalate quickly, with activism shifting from discussion to confrontation as campaigns intensify.

Notably, at Columbia University, JVP and SJP chapters were both suspended from campus in November of 2023 after organizing protests that were described as including “threatening rhetoric and intimidation.”

How Does JVP Support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement?

This is an easy answer. Jewish Voice for Peace formally endorsed BDS in 2015. The BDS movement, which encourages isolation of Israel via boycotts of its academic, cultural, financial, diplomatic, and professional institutions, is defined as an effort to delegitimize Jewish statehood by the ADL.

What Is JVP’s Structure?

JVP operates as a national nonprofit with a network of local chapters across the United States. Its structure includes a central leadership team and board, semi-autonomous local chapters, and a student arm (JVP-Students) active on campuses nationwide. Funding comes through donations, grants, and membership contributions, supporting both national campaigns and localized organizing.

Conclusion: JVP Is Anything But A ‘Voice For Peace’

Jewish Voice for Peace presents itself as a values-driven advocacy group. In practice, it operates as a coordinated activist network with a clear strategic focus and a strong campus footprint: to isolate dissenting Jewish voices and push a narrative that lays blame for complex conflict completely on Israel. It has caused disruptions on university campuses, distributed material that inverts Jewish history to punish Jews and Israel, and excused October 7th as a result of “Jewish supremacy.” It continues to be an organization that, rather than promoting peace through understanding, promotes division, exclusion, and isolation.
