Tajee Bounds

State: New York
City: New York City
Campus: Columbia University (Columbia)

On April 30 2024, Tajee Bounds led a protest outside the gates of Columbia University in Manhattan during the height of the Gaza Solidarity Encampment organized under the Columbia University Apartheid Divest coalition. The demonstration took place as tensions on campus were escalating following days of encampment activity and growing administrative intervention.

The protest was organized by CUAD and centered on demands that Columbia divest from financial ties to Israel, disclose its investment portfolio, and grant immunity from disciplinary action to all participants involved in the protests. These demands mirrored those advanced by CUAD and affiliated organizations nationwide following the October 7 2023 Hamas terrorist attacks and Israel’s subsequent military response.

As the evening progressed, protesters moved from demonstration to direct action. Activists illegally forced entry into Hamilton Hall, barricading themselves inside the building and vandalizing university property. In response, the New York City Police Department intervened at the request of the Columbia administration.

University President Minouche Shafik cited the intensification of protests and the disruption of campus operations as justification for requesting police assistance, stating that the situation had become unsafe and untenable for the broader student body.

That night, NYPD officers cleared Hamilton Hall and surrounding protest sites. More than 100 individuals were arrested during the operation, marking one of the largest mass arrest events in Columbia’s recent history and triggering nationwide attention and copycat encampments on other campuses.
