Jafari Sinclaire Allen holds major institutional power within Columbia University. As Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies, Director of the Institute for Research in African American Studies, and Editor in Chief of Souls, he shapes academic narratives, trains emerging scholars, and influences political discourse well beyond campus walls.
Allen has used that influence to consistently promote pro Palestinian activism and to align himself with movements that frame Israel as an oppressive force while encouraging faculty and students to adopt a radical, intersectional approach to the conflict. His activism became especially visible during the 2024 Columbia encampment, where he not only participated but became one of its most vocal faculty promoters.
Between April 26 and April 29, Allen posted enthusiastic documentation of the encampment, highlighting the presence of Jewish anti Zionist participants and mocking pro Israel students by calling them a “mob coalition.” On April 30, he posted a photo of the NYPD outside campus with the caption “utterly unjustifiable,” amplifying activist messaging that law enforcement intervention, not the encampment itself, was the real threat.
On May 1, following the violent arrest of protesters who took over and vandalized Hamilton Hall, Allen released a personal public statement escalating his criticism of Columbia’s response. Days later he amplified an official statement from his academic unit, presenting the encampment as righteous student activism rather than the site of intimidation and antisemitic hostility many students reported.
Allen continued to cheerlead activism into the summer. On June 1, he posted a photo of a new encampment tent on Columbia’s lawn with a banner reading “WE’RE BACK B**CHES,” celebrating the return of a movement that had already destabilized campus operations for weeks.
Prior to 2024, Allen was already deeply involved in pro Palestinian academic activism. He participated in a December 2023 roundtable that explicitly tied Black feminist and radical traditions to Palestinian resistance, framing Gaza as a feminist issue and advocating for intersectional solidarity. His comments rejected what he described as “narratives of innocence” for Israel, citing figures in Black radical thought to make a case for unwavering support of Palestinian liberation.
He has repeatedly signed statements condemning Israel, opposing academic partnerships, and supporting boycott movements, including the Anthropologists for the Boycott of Israeli Academic Institutions campaign. His social media history reflects a consistent ideological throughline: embracing anti Israel frameworks and presenting Palestinian resistance as morally justified within broader liberation struggles.
Through his leadership roles, public posts, and speaking engagements, Allen has helped normalize and legitimize highly politicized activism inside Columbia’s academic life. His rhetoric consistently downplays the harm experienced by Jewish and Israeli students while elevating movements that have contributed to campus wide polarization and fear.

Impact on Campus Climate and Accountability Concerns
Allen’s high ranking academic roles give his activism disproportionate influence. His public behavior during the encampment amplified hostility toward Jewish and Israeli students, minimized the documented threats they faced, and framed law enforcement intervention as illegitimate regardless of safety concerns. His repeated posts mocking opposing students and celebrating encampment escalation show a pattern of ideological commitment that prioritizes activism over academic responsibility.
