Who Is Priya Satia?

Priya Satia is the Raymond A. Spruance Professor of International History at Stanford University, specializing in modern British and British Empire history. Her academic focus on empire and colonialism increasingly spills into contemporary politics, and never more so than when it comes to Israel.

Satia consistently paints Israel as a byproduct of European imperial strategy and settler-colonial design. That interpretation, however, clashes with the widely documented history of Jewish presence in the land and the modern Zionist movement’s roots in a long-standing quest for Jewish self-determination stretching back thousands of years. Reducing Israel to an imperial side project of Britain is not just historically contested – it erases Jewish national identity from the story altogether. At a prestigious university, that distinction matters.

How Has Priya Satia Depicted Israel as a Simple Byproduct of Empire?

Priya Satia’s scholarship and commentary repeatedly situate Israel as a part of a general critique of European imperialism. Rather than treating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a distinct and complex geopolitical issue, her writing folds it into narratives of capitalist extraction, racial hierarchy, and settler-colonialism.

  • December 2023 – in an essay, she argued that modern European-style empires reshaped the world through “capitalist, extractive, territorial, and racial logics” that continue to drive global suffering. Saying that “failure to recognize the novelties of European colonialism has abetted continued settler colonial violence in Palestine,” Satia linked Israel’s military actions as a result of Hamas’s October 7th attack directly to imperial patterns of domination, rather than defensive response.
  • June 2021 – she authored an article for Al Jazeera contending that Israel’s actions in Gaza are, “part of a longer story of settler-colonialism dating from the heyday of European colonialism” and casting doubt on the legitimacy of the founding of the state of Israel in 1948.

  • March 2019 – in an interview with the Stanford Report, Satia discussed the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan and emphasized that the British’s partition logic was applied in Palestine, again painting Israel’s statehood as a solely colonial phenomenon.

Her consistent pattern raises serious questions about whether her students are being presented with a full historical spectrum or a one-way through line.

What Has Priya Satia Said About Federal Oversight On-Campus?

As federal investigations into antisemitism on college campuses, including Stanford, intensified, Priya Satia publicly weighed in in an opinion piece in The Stanford Daily. In the March 2025 article, she argued that the U.S. government was fighting a “phony war against antisemitism” on college campuses. She cited a public statement made by university professionals that the Department of Education was using “Jews as a shield to justify a naked attack on political dissent and university independence” in an Orwellian witch hunt.

At a time when Jewish students have reported harassment tied to anti-Israel activism and Jewish faculty have filed lawsuits against Stanford for antisemitism, dismissing scrutiny as suppression adds fuel to an already volatile campus climate.

Has Priya Satia Supported BDS and Divestment Campaigns?

Beyond essays and op-eds, Priya Satia’s record includes formal support for divestment initiatives targeting Israel—moves that go beyond abstract historical analysis and into organized political pressure.

  • February 2015 – by signing a petition, Satia urged Stanford University to divest from companies profiting from “the occupation of Palestinian territories” by Israel.

Conclusion: What Priya Satia’s Bias Means for Stanford

Priya Satia holds one of the most prestigious history chairs at Stanford University. But when her public record consistently casts Israel as a colonial project rather than realization of a centuries-long Jewish dream, endorses BDS, and characterizes antisemitism investigations as suppression, implications abound.

Stanford, as a federally funded institution, is bound by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to address discrimination, including antisemitic harassment. Faculty who downplay antisemitism concerns complicate that obligation. And Priya Satia’s framing of Israel as merely an imperial artifact not only reinterprets history, risks erasing space for Jewish self-determination perspectives on Stanford’s campus.
