Who Is Mrigender Singh Virk?

Mrigender Singh Virk is a pathologist affiliated with Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital. Since October of 2023, Virk has also aligned himself with anti-Israel activism tied to Faculty for Justice in Palestine networks and boycott pressure campaigns. For a Stanford-affiliated physician, that shift carries weight, and raises flags about neutrality in medical care when a provider is so publicly aligned with one side of a conflict.

How Has Mrigender Singh Virk Engaged in Anti-Israel Activism?

Mrigender Singh Virk’s name appears in connection with Faculty for Justice in Palestine (FJP) organizing following the October 7th attacks. FJP chapters nationwide have pushed divestment campaigns, institutional condemnations of Israel, and academic boycotts.

  • September 2024 – he signed a petition demanding that Stanford Medicine recognize and condemn Israel’s “war crimes and genocide” in Gaza, divest from companies allegedly complicit in war crimes, and cease related purchasing. His name was later removed from the public signatory list.
  • November 2023 – under Stanford University FJP, he signed a letter of support from Haverford Faculty for Justice in Palestine condemning anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia, referencing “long-standing efforts of Zionists to suppress pro-Palestinian voices on college campuses, including the targeting of groups such as
Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace,” and calling for institutional backing of “free speech” alongside an academic boycott of Israel.

The boycott demand is central. Academic boycotts target Israeli universities and scholars based on nationality. For a Stanford-affiliated physician to endorse that framework places him inside a coordinated faculty effort to isolate Israeli academia.

What Has Mrigender Singh Virk Posted on Social Media About Israel?

In addition to formal petitions, Mrigender Singh Virk has used social media to criticize Israel one-sidedly.

  • January 19, 2024 – he attempted to defend the use of the phrase “from the river to the sea” by comparing similar usage by Prime Minister Netanyahu, ignoring the geographical fact that the Jewish state of Israel exists in the space in question.

  • November 21, 2023 – in response to a post about hope for release of Israel civilian hostages and a ceasefire, Virk said, “How about holding Israel accountable for its war crimes?”

  • November 5, 2023 – he reposted a list by Noura Erakat, known for her extremely anti-Israel stance, on what to boycott related to Israel.

  • October 24, 2023 – he posted that Israel’s military action, taken as a direct result of Hamas’s infiltration and massacre on October 7th, “isn’t a targeted response to Hamas. It is indiscriminate bombing…it is an attempt to crush any form of self-advocacy, militant or not…”

Repeated genocide accusations and parroting of antisemitic conspiracy theories show that Virk’s rhetoric is a level up from simple commentary.

Conclusion: What Mrigender Singh Virk Means for Stanford

Mrigender Singh Virk is more than a Stanford pathologist with strong views on foreign policy. He signed petitions accusing Israel of “genocide,” endorsed divestment demands directed at Stanford Medicine, aligned with Faculty for Justice in Palestine statements calling for academic boycotts, and amplified antisemitic conspiracy theories online.

When physicians affiliated with major academic medical centers join coordinated boycott campaigns and pressure their institutions to take geopolitical stances, it raises hard questions about neutrality, nondiscrimination, and professional boundaries at Stanford.
